Aww, I can remember those times. When I was six or seven years old, I - along with other children of my school class - sat on the shoulder of a soviet soldier while the troops were parading past Honecker & Co. in Ernst-Thälmann-Straße (today Wilsdruffer Straße/Altmarkt). We had these parades on Mayday (1st May) each year. I was carrying a little soviet flag and a red carnation - boy, was I Klischee...
I remember that I tried to see the soldiers face but couldn't, since his hat was so big and hid his face which was turned to the right side. Sitting on a marching man's shoulders felt a bit like sitting on a horse, was what I was thinking that day
I know the word "russensportplatz" for a place that once was a "sportifnaja ploschadka" to the soviet army must sound terrible in the ear of a Russian, and I myself hate the expression. But what can I do, people here just became used to it and it is also not so easy to find the right word for something that earlier meant one nation but now has to sound good in the ears of two dozen peoples
But the project behind the "russensportplatz für alle"-website is a good one. The Neustadt has turned into a heavily overcrowded piece of earth, the only park (Alaunplatz) ist totally overused. So people here are fighting for the revitalisation of the former "sportifnaja ploschadka" of the soviet army, which is lying in ruins since the army left in 1992.
Thank u for this, Oleg! Could be me 20 years later. I remember standing between all these crazy people holding flags and playing drums and flutes with my class mates and waiting for a soldier to pick me up. When it was time, I found myself on his shoulders so quickly, that I almost lost my flower. At first I was so afraid to fall off, that I "hugged" the soldier desperately, which meant quite something, since I was a rather shy kid towards strangers But hey, "my soldier" didn't give me his hat to wear

I'm sorry, but this photo was taken before 1969. Uniforms of the soldiers is the old species. This was before 1969

Oh, I'm pretty sure, it is. Obviously it's from 1967. But they had german Kids (Junge Pioniere) on their shoulders for official parades then and they still did 20 years later - 1987, when I was such a young pionieer and sitting on the shoulders of a soviet soldier. That's what I wanted to say.
